Google
Without doubt the largest search engine in the world. Google served almost 3.8 billion searches in April 2007, according to data from Nielsen//NetRatings. Google holds a 55.2 percent search share. The search engine served close to 3.8 billion searches in April. Google is a search engine that uses the link popularity of a website, amongst other techniques, to rank web sites within its directory. Google argues that the frequency of these links means that sites with the most links to them have been effectively endorsed by the other sites and should therefore be ranked higher.

Yahoo
Yahoo garnered a 21.9 percent share of the market with 1.5 billion searches. Yahoo is the oldest major web site directory, having launched in late 1994 and is considered by many to be the most popular search service.
